Poker professional Scotty Nguyen won nearly $2 million at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas on Monday, topping a field of 148 players and emerging from a marathon final table with his fifth gold bracelet. Nguyen beat out 23-year-old Michael DeMichele in H.O.R.S.E., a rotating-game tournament that cost $50,000 to enter.

Sarkozy may attend opening ceremonies (AP)

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, apparently backing off a boycott threat, said Monday he could attend the opening of the Beijing Olympics if talks between China and the Dalai Lama make more progress. Representatives of the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader are expected to meet this week with Chinese officials for two days of discussions.

Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic and No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova were ousted in the fourth round Monday, leaving Wimbledon without any of the top four women in the quarterfinals for the first time. A hobbled Jankovic fell 6-3, 6-2 to Tamarine Tanasugarn, while 2004 U.S. Open champion Kuznetsova lost 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to 19-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland.

Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic was ousted in straight sets in the fourth round by Tamarine Tanasugarn on Monday, leaving the women’s draw without its top three ranked players. Jankovic’s 6-3, 6-2 loss means that none of the top three women reached the quarterfinals — the first time that’s happened at a Grand Slam tournament in the Open era.

A trip across town made all the difference for the White Sox. Swept by the Cubs a week ago at Wrigley Field, they were the ones doing the sweeping in their home park on the South Side of town. They finished off the three-victory run at U.S. Cellular Field on Sunday night, beating the Cubs 5-1 with homers from Carlos Quentin, Brian Anderson and Jim Thome backing solid pitching from Mark Buehrle.
